Post India's independence on 15 August 1947, there was no permanent constitution. To prepare it, a Drafting Committee was appointed on 28 August 1947 with Dr BR Ambedkar as chairman. After many modifications, the members of the Assembly gave green signal on 24 January 1950 by signing two hand-written copies (in Hindi and English). On 26th January 1950, it was formally adopted as India’s constitution.
The first president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, took oath at Durbar Hall in the Rashtrapati Bhavan to began his tenure.
